Faculty profile
The Faculty of Civil Engineering was founded on 1 October 1953 as a part of the Railway University in Prague, which was established by separating the Faculty of Railway Engineering from the Czech Technical University. Between 1959 and 1961, the school moved from Prague to Žilina and at the same time its name was changed to the Transport University. In 1961, the Faculty of Civil Engineering merged with the Faculty of Transport to form the Faculty of Transport Operations and Economics. In 1977 the faculty was renamed the Faculty of Transport and Communications Operations and Economics. In 1980, the College of Transport was renamed the College of Transport and Communications in Žilina.
The Faculty of Construction was re-established as an independent entity in 1990. In February 1991 the faculty was accredited. Its organizational components were six departments, which educated students in the field of study Reconstruction and Construction Maintenance of Transport Structures.
Currently, the faculty consists of eight departments (Department of Structural Mechanics and Applied Mathematics, Department of Geodesy, Department of Geotechnics, Department of Building Structures and Bridges, Department of Civil Engineering and Urban Planning, Department of Railway Engineering and Track Management, Department of Road Construction and Department of Construction Technology and Management) and four supporting faculty departments (Centre of Excellence for Transportation Engineering, Centre for Applied Research of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation Research Centre and Testing Laboratory of the Faculty of Civil Engineering).
The Faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Žilina in Žilina trains experts for engineering structures, transport and civil engineering and related fields. Since 1995, the faculty has applied a credit system of study, which creates conditions for more active involvement of students in the teaching process and expands the possibilities for students to realize their own idea of their professional focus. The main goal of education is to profile graduates with a good theoretical basis and professional knowledge, graduates able to creatively apply theory to concrete practical problems.
