Public Health Care

The full-time study form of Public Health is mono-disciplinary and organizationally divided into the first  level of university education in full-time study form (6 semesters)  - bachelor´s degree study (Bc.) and the second level of university education (4 semesters) – master´s degree study (Mgr.) and the third level of university education (6 semesters) – postgraduate study (PhD.).

The study programme is based on a vision of public health development as it is defined by international institutions (EU, the World Health Organization, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, ASPHER) and is designed to be in accordance with the Lisbon Process.

This study programme is a set of courses comprised of educational activities, which are mainly lecture, seminar, lessons, final thesis, project work, internship, educational excursion, professional experience, state examination. The syllabus is comprised of compulsory, compulsory optional and elective subjects so that the minimum of credits acquired for meeting the given requirements was in accordance with the Study Regulations of the Faculty of Health Care and Social Work of the Trnava University.

Another compulsory part of teaching in the master´s degree study is 6 weeks long professional pre-diploma practice. The practice lasts 180 hours and is carried out in the facility, which is directly related to the topic of diploma thesis. This practice is done in the 5th semester of study.



Prospects of graduates

The Public Health graduate becomes a qualified medical worker with great professional profile, ready to independently perform professional activities in the field of health promotion and protection, primary prevention and in the field of clinical epidemiology and research.

 

Competences of Public Health graduate:

 

  • to perform state health control in the sphere of the living environment and work environment, health protection at work, creation and protection of healthy living and working conditions of children and youth in workplaces with sources of ionizing radiation,
  • to perform epidemiological supervision and related professional activities,
  • to perform activities in accordance with the principles and conception of the state health policy and to be involved in the fulfilment of the goals of health promotion programs and medical education projects,
  • planning of activities, which have an impact on health,
  • to perform health administration,
  • to perform expert´s opinions, analysis of population´s health state and causes of its changes, consultancy,
  • education and research activity.

 

 

A Public Health graduate has theoretical knowledge, practical capabilities and skills, which are required when working in public and private sector in the sphere of development, health promotion and protection, when planning activities, which have an impact on health and health administration. 

 

Graduate:

  • knows the sphere of clinical epidemiology, evidence-based medicine,
  • knows the sphere of health promotion and protection of an individual and society, prepares and plans a contentual, chronological and also budgetary framework of the project in the field of health protection and promotion, prepares, plans and evaluates the effectiveness of intervention programmes, 
  • applies legislation, planning and management in public health, management of health, social and environmental policy,

 

  • evaluates the health indicators and subsequently suggests solutions for improvement, objectifies physical, chemical and biological factors of living and work environment,
  • defines and abides by the medical ethics, the basics of methodology in practice, research and medical informatics and statistics, can justify the defined nursing preventative, diagnostic and therapeutic methods and procedures,
  • performs quality management and human source management,
  • defines and analyses the issue of nosocomial infection, disinfection, sterilization, antibiotic resistance in hospitals and community,
  • assesses and evaluates the risks and medical needs of a community (workplace, enterprise),
  • knows the sphere of science and research, analyses and interprets the statistical data, can use statistical data processing at univariate, bivariate and multivariate level,
  • communicates in his field at the professional level, masters a foreign language at such level that enables him/she to orientate in foreign expert literature, can organize own education and research, can constantly acquire the latest knowledge, further educate yourself and use the acquired knowledge in practice,
  • masters the basics of scientific work in his field and knows the ways of acquiring scientific and expert information,
  • discusses and presents in different ways professional issues and its solutions, can understand and explain the quantitative dimensions of a problem, 
  • keeps in touch with new knowledge in his/her field and continues in own professional development.

 Prospects of master´s degree graduates

 

  • in state administration: ministries and fields of health care, environment, public health authorities,
  • in local self-government: issues with health protection and promotion, impacts of environment on health, prevention programs,
  • health at work services: safety technical service or ambulance services,
  • hospitals and other health facilities, in which is usually performed development and evaluation of the quality of provided services,
  • as a researcher with a specialization especially in the study of occurrence, causes and consequences of contagious and non-contagious in bulk occurring diseases, impacts of living and work environment on health, and other,
  • as a consultant for preparation, implementation and evaluation of projects in public health,
  • in pharmaceutical companies: clinical testing of drugs
  • providing consultations about the change of individuals´ lifestyle,
  • at labour inspectorates,
  • educational institutions.

Conditions of admission

Applicants for the second degree of university studies in the field of study called Public Health must have completed the bachelor´s degree study in the same field of study.



Additional information

The application form includes:

- curriculum vitae

- confirmation of the admissions fee payment

- medical certificate of eligibility for university studies

- certified photocopies of bachelor study evidences (diploma, state examination certificate, diploma supplement)

Applicants finishing their bachelor study in the school year 2019/2020 have to submit all of the (certified) evidence of completing their studies until July 10, 2020.

To the electronic application must be attached the signed printed form of application.

If the applicant doesn´t complete the missing parts of the application within the set deadline after being requested to do so, he/she is excluded from the admission procedure. The admission fee will not be refunded.



Conditions for international students

Applicants, who have completed secondary education at school abroad shall submit a certificate of education certified by a notary. The requirements for admitting students from foreign countries are the same as for students who are citizens of the Slovak Republic.

The minimum of applicants to open the study in the part-time form is 6.
