Radiological technique

The Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Prešov is an institution whose main task is to educate students in accredited non-medical study programmes at the level of contemporary knowledge, scientific and research results.

The study field of Radiological Technology prepares professionally qualified, medical professionals for radiology (formerly radiodiagnostics), radiotherapy and nuclear medicine.

Characteristics of the field of study

Radiological Technology is a field of study of the system of fields of study administered by the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic as a field of knowledge (§ 102 (3) (d) in conjunction with § 83 (7) of Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Higher Education and on Amendments and Additions to Certain Acts, as amended by later regulations after the Accreditation Commission has expressed its opinion).

General characteristics of the graduate profile

The Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Prešov is an institution whose main task is to educate students in accredited non-medical study programmes at the level of contemporary knowledge, scientific and research results.

The study field of Radiological Technology prepares professionally qualified, health care professionals for radiology (formerly radiodiagnostics), radiotherapy and nuclear medicine. The main topics of the core of knowledge of the 1st cycle of the university studies are mainly related to the theory and practice of radiotherapy

Definition of the core of knowledge (level 1)

The core of knowledge in the 1st year of study includes:

  • general core (psychology, professional communication, professional ethics, Latin language, psychology, pedagogy and sociology)
  • anatomical, physical, biophysical and radiobiological core (anatomy and physiology, topographical anatomy, radiological physics, radiobiology)
  • radiology-clinical core (radiology, radiological instrumentation, ionising radiation protection)
  • pre-clinical and clinical core (first aid, fundamentals of nursing, nursing practice, preventive medicine, microbiology)

Kernel of knowledge in the 2nd year of study includes:

  • general core (fundamentals of research, thesis seminar)
  • radiology and radiology-clinical core (radiology, radiological instrumentation, clinical oncology, internal medicine, surgery, radiation oncology, instrumentation in radiology, clinical exercises in radiology, nuclear medicine)
  • pre-clinical and clinical core (pathology, pharmacology)

Kernel of knowledge in the 3rd year of study includes:

  • general core (health economics, law and legislation in professional activity, health management)
  • radiology-clinical core (radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, clinical exercises in radiological technology)
  • final thesis (bachelor thesis, thesis defense)

State Final Examination:

  • defence of the final thesis
  • radiological technology (colloquium in radiology, nuclear medicine, instrumentation in radiological technology, radiation oncology)
  • clinical practice in radiological technology

Graduate Profile:

The graduate of radiological technology obtains the university qualification of a health professional authorized to practice the health profession in the fields of radiology, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine. He/she is entitled to perform radiological imaging procedures independently on the basis of a doctor's indication, thus fulfilling the role of an applied specialist. On the basis of a physician's prescription, independently performs radiation techniques in radiation oncology, is responsible for the accuracy and safety of these techniques, participates in dosimetric measurements.

Absolvent is sufficiently qualified to determine the necessary dose of ionizing radiation in X-ray imaging methods and also to ensure error-free, gentle, yet effective therapeutic irradiation of the patient. His qualification obliges him to take full responsibility for the procedures he performs.

The graduate is ready to join a dedicated team that implements, evaluates and establishes the quality standards of the department. He/she is able to fully utilize radiology technology within the scope of his/her professional qualifications. His qualifications enable him to organise his work adequately, rationally and economically within the healthcare team.

The graduate applies at work all the acquired theoretical and clinical expertise, as well as knowledge of medical management and health law.

The graduate knows the methods and techniques of research work and can apply them in radiological research.

Theoretical knowledge (level 1) :

By studying the discipline graduate:

  • acquire and understand the essential concepts, facts, principles and theories related to imaging techniques in the diagnostic use of ionising and non-ionising radiation in medicine
  • learn and understand the essential concepts, facts, principles and theories related to radiation techniques in all modalities of radiotherapy
  • learn and understand the essential concepts, facts, principles and theories in relation to the different types of ionising radiation used in medicine and their effects on living systems, taking into account deterministic and stochastic risks
  • implements the acquired knowledge in radiation protection of the patient, optimizing radiation dose in medical imaging and therapeutic radiological procedures
  • acquires knowledge of medical technology, radiological technology to apply in relation to radiological imaging and radiotherapeutic procedures and techniques, with a view to maximising the safety of the patient and the medical staff involved
  • apply knowledge of the structure of the healthy human body, topographical conditions and physiological processes taking place in the body in his/her practical work
  • acquires knowledge and knowledge from biomedical and humanities (preclinical and clinical) subjects, applies them in meeting the needs of the patient, in radiological imaging and radiotherapy procedures

Practical skills and competencies (level 1):

Departmental Associate:

  • under the direction of a physician, independently performs radiological imaging examinations, fulfilling the role of the applying specialist, taking full responsibility for the implementation of these procedures
  • on the basis of a doctor's prescription, independently performs irradiation techniques in radiotherapy, being responsible for the accuracy and safety of the performance of these techniques
  • practically applies all rules, restrictions and recommendations for the protection of health against ionising radiation in relation to patients and medical staff
  • uses radiological techniques within the scope of his/her professional competence with regard to ensuring the comfort of the patient
  • is able to provide nursing care to patients during radiological imaging and radiotherapy procedures, including skilled pre-medical first aid
  • is a member of a team that contributes to the development of quality standards in the department

Additional knowledge, skills and competences (level 1):

Departmental Graduate:

  • knows the structure of health care in the Slovak Republic and neighbouring countries and its position in the health care structure
  • acquires and implements knowledge of health management, health law, psychology and ethics in a professional approach to patients and colleagues
  • implements the results of scientific research in radiology in his/her practice and is able to work as a member of a research team
  • is theoretically and practically prepared to obtain the qualifications necessary for professional supervision of radiation protection
  • is able to participate in practical teaching of students in the field
  • knows and communicates in at least one foreign language and is able to study foreign literature
  • knows how to use a computer

Conditions of admission

EXTERNAL FORM

Criteria for admission to study/external form of study - without entrance examination

Applicants for external study will be admitted after fulfilling the prescribed conditions:

1. Completion of complete secondary or complete secondary vocational education with a secondary school leaving certificate in the following field of study: radiological assistant or higher vocational education in the field of study of certified radiological assistant/technician

2. employment at the time of applying for studies as a radiology technician with a fixed weekly working time; the applicant must enclose with his/her application a confirmation from his/her employer of his/her employment status and the fixed working hours

3. Criterion without entrance examination

4. fulfilment of the criterion of medical fitness for the profession according to Decree of the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic No.364/2009, which establishes the criteria of medical fitness for applicants for medical study fields (applicants shall submit a recommendation of a general practitioner for studying in the given field to the application form).



Additional information

The application must contain the following:

1/ Application(form):

electronic application form (admission fee 40 EUR) applicants fill in and submit their electronic application form on the HE Portal website: Electronization of university application | ApplicationForms.sk or on the website of the Ministry of Education, Research and Youth of the Slovak Republic: Application for studies, tax return extract and other forms | Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth of the Slovak Republic

- electronic application form with attachments should be printed ´, signed , and sent by post to the address of the Faculty of Health Professions of PU

- without receiving the printed electronic application form along with attachments, the electronic application form is invalid and the candidate will not be included in the admission process!

2/ Evidence of merit:

Applicants applying for external form of study do not need to fill in or provide evidence of high school grades. As proof of completion of secondary education, they shall submit only an officially certified matriculation certificate

with their application form.

3/ Other application documents (form attachments to the online application form):

(a) certification by a medical practitioner of the applicant's medical fitness to practisethe medical profession

(b) structured curriculum vitae

c) proof of Slovak language proficiency- level B1 - to be provided by foreign applicants (except applicants from the Czech Republic) (see chap. 1.4)

4/ In case the applicant wants to apply for more study programmes at the faculty, he/she must submit a separate application for each study programme separately and pay the fee for each application separately.

5/ Only those candidates who submit a duly completed application form, attach all the required enclosures, pay the admission fee and meet the required criteria within the stipulated deadline ( 31 March 2026) will be invited for the entrance examination. An alternative date for the entrance examination may only be requested in writing in the event of a serious medical reason, no later than 24 hours after the date of the entrance examination (the application must be accompanied by a relevant medical report of the medical problem, not a certificate of treatment). The faculty does not grant a make-up date in the event of a failed entrance examination.

6/ Administrative fee for the admission process, will not be refunded to applicants in the following cases:

a) if the application form is incomplete and the applicant fails to do so even after being asked to complete the required documents within 5 days

b) if the applicant does not meet the required criteria and has applied for the course anyway

c) if the applicant applies for a study programme which the faculty does not plan to implement in the given academic year

d) if he/she does not enrol for the study

If the student/applicant makes an erroneous payment, he/she will be charged a fee for the erroneous payment in accordance with the current PU Presov price list for the academic year in which he/she applied and the remaining funds will be refunded to the sender's bank account.

7/ ALL THE REQUIREMENTS LISTED ARE REQUIRED AND AN APPLICATION WITHOUT THEM WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!

8/External form of study is charged according to Act No.131/2002 on Higher Education and its amendment No.363/2007 Coll. The amount of tuition fees is published on the faculty's website http://www.unipo.sk/fakulta-zdravotnictva.

The length of study in the study programme in the external form at the bachelor's degree is 3 years!



Conditions for international students

1.4Information for international applicants

Study in study programmes at the 1st and 2nd level of higher education and in full-time and external form, which is carried out in the Slovak language, requires knowledge of the Slovak language at least at the B1 level. We recommend that applicants from abroad (except applicants from the Czech Republic) verify and prove their mastery of the Slovak language by a Slovak language matriculation examination, an ECL (European Consortium for the Certificate of Attaiment in Modern Languages) certificate of Slovak language proficiency at B1 level, a certificate of Slovak language proficiency at B1 level issued by a language school included in the network of schools and school facilities of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Slovak Republic (the list is available at: https://www.cvtisr.sk/buxus/docs//JH/stat_zus.pdf ). Proficiency in the Slovak language is verified in written tests for foreign applicants.

Slovak language proficiency at B1 level:

a) in the area of comprehension:

- the candidate understands the main ideas expressed in written language on common topics encountered at work, school, leisure, etc. Understands the meaning of many radio and TV programmes on current affairs or topics related to areas of personal or professional interest if they are spoken relatively slowly and clearly

- Understands texts which contain everyday vocabulary or which relate to work or study. Can understand descriptions of events, feelings and wishes in personal letters

b) in the area of communication:

- Demonstrates ability to cope with most situations that may arise when travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can engage in conversation without preparation on topics that he/she is familiar with, interested in or related to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current affairs)

- knows how to string phrases together in a simple way to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and goals. He/she can give concise reasons and explanations for his/her views and plans. Can tell a story or relate the content of a book or film and describe his/her reactions.

c)in the area of written expression:

- knows how to write simple coherent sentences on topics that he/she knows well or that
are of personal interest to him/her. He/she can write private letters describing experiences and impressions.
