Mediamatics and Cultural heritage

The doctoral study program prepares graduates for research and professional practice in the fields of media, culture, and the creative industries. It provides advanced knowledge in media and marketing communication, digital content management, and the protection of cultural heritage. Graduates are able to analyze, create, and manage media and information projects and respond flexibly to the needs of professional practice as well as the academic environment.

Prospects of graduates

A graduate of the doctoral study program is prepared for basic and applied research in the sectors of media, culture, the creative industries, or in academia. The study plan reflects the current and anticipated future needs of these sectors and employers in the field, while the acquired knowledge, skills, and competencies reflect the current state of knowledge in the discipline’s methodology and form a basis for innovation and originality in practice, development, and research.

The graduate understands the content and objectives of media and marketing communication in connection with cultural heritage and the creative industries, including within the modern digital environment. They possess advanced knowledge and experience in the analysis, design, and management of various types of information and media content in the digital environment across the state, public, and private sectors.

In line with the European strategy for culture and the strengthening of national and European identity, the graduate is able to inform and present topics, analyses, and solutions related to supporting the protection and promotion of cultural heritage. They have in-depth knowledge of the principles of managing professional activities in media, cultural, and memory institutions, including in the context of their future digital transformation, applicable legislation, and project management.

The graduate profile enables flexible adaptation to the dynamically changing expectations and needs of relevant sectors (including an emphasis on so-called professions of the future), as well as to the academic environment.

Conditions of admission

The basic requirement for admission to doctoral studies (third-cycle study program) is the completion of a second-cycle university degree (Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Higher Education, as amended). In the case of a foreign applicant or a student who completed their studies abroad, the applicant must submit—no later than the enrollment date—a decision on the recognition of their second-cycle higher education diploma issued by the relevant institution in the Slovak Republic, or they may request recognition of their educational document through UNIZA.

For study at the institute, written and spoken proficiency in Slovak, Czech, or English is required.

Additional Admission Requirements

  1. All applicants must undergo an admission procedure. For applicants to the part-time (external) form of study, the institute also considers their abilities and qualifications resulting from their professional experience over at least the last two years.

  2. The admission examination takes the form of a selection procedure aimed at ensuring that applicants admitted to the program have the necessary abilities and prerequisites. The exam consists of a presentation of the applicant’s own project related to the chosen dissertation topic, followed by an expert discussion during which the applicant must demonstrate the potential for independent scientific research and a good orientation in the selected field of study.

  3. The admission examination is conducted before an admissions committee for the given study program. The committee evaluates the result of the examination in a closed session with the conclusion “pass” or “fail.” The committee submits a recommended list of successful applicants for admission to the Rector.

  4. The selection of applicants for the third cycle is based on a ranking determined by:

  • Results of the admission examination (max. 40 points; the number of points is decided by the admissions committee). The minimum number of points required to pass the admission examination and meet the admission requirements is 24 points (60%).

  • Results of previous studies (max. 30 points), awarded according to the weighted study average (WSA) from second-cycle higher education as follows:

    • WSA 1.00 – 1.25 = 30 points

    • WSA 1.26 – 1.99 = 20 points

    • WSA 2.00 or higher = 0 points

  • Publication and scientific activity (max. 30 points; the number of points is determined by the admissions committee).

Applicants are admitted based on the final ranking according to the total number of points obtained.

Conditions for international students

For foreign applicants, the same admission conditions apply as for applicants from the Slovak Republic. Foreign students studying in the Slovak language do not pay tuition fees. Applicants from the Czech Republic may use the application form valid in the Czech Republic when applying for studies. For foreign applicants admitted on the basis of intergovernmental agreements, bilateral treaties, or as scholarship holders of the Government of the Slovak Republic, the conditions specified in the relevant documents apply.
