Conditions of admission

Basic admission requirement

The basic condition for admission to a first cycle study programme is the acquisition of a complete secondary education or a complete secondary vocational education (Higher Education Act). In the case of a foreign applicant or a student who has completed secondary education abroad, the basic condition for admission to the study programme is education comparable to that completed by the matriculation examination in the Slovak Republic. An applicant who has received secondary education abroad shall submit a decision on the recognition of the document on the completion of secondary education by the relevant institution in the Slovak Republic with the application for university studies, or at the latest at the time of enrolment in the studies. To study at the institute in the Slovak language, written and oral proficiency in Slovak or Czech is required. For foreign applicants (except for applicants from the Czech Republic) studying in Slovak, successful completion of a language test in the Slovak language with a minimum B1 level is required.

Other admission conditions

Applicants from grammar schools who have achieved an arithmetic average of grades on the end-of-year report card for the penultimate year of studies (not the final year of studies) up to and including 2.50 are admitted without an entrance examination. Applicants from vocational secondary schools and academies who have achieved an arithmetical average of marks in the final year certificate for the penultimate year of studies (not the final year of studies) up to and including 2.00 are admitted without an entrance examination. Applicants - graduates of secondary schools who have been successful solvers of Olympiads and SOČs related to the content of the study programme during their secondary school studies and who have been ranked in the first three places and who prove their diploma are admitted without an entrance examination. Meeting one of the conditions listed above is sufficient for admission without an entrance examination. If the applicant does not fulfil the above conditions, he/she must take an entrance examination.

Admission Examination

The entrance examination will take the form of a written test covering the secondary school curriculum in the subjects of Social Studies/Civics, Slovak Language and Literature and Computer Science. All applicants have the same conditions and time limit for completing the written test. Candidates answer the questions by marking the answers on the test sheets for each subject area. The Institute of Media and Cultural Heritage is responsible for the administration of the entrance examination. The fulfilment of the conditions for admission is assessed by an admissions committee appointed by the Director of the Institute.

Conditions for international students

For foreign applicants, the admission conditions apply as for applicants from the Slovak Republic. Foreign students studying in Slovak language do not pay tuition fees. Applicants from the Czech Republic may use the form valid in the Czech Republic to apply for studies. For foreign applicants admitted on the basis of interstate agreements, bilateral treaties or for scholarship holders of the Government of the Slovak Republic, the conditions specified in the relevant documents apply.

An applicant who has obtained secondary education abroad shall submit a decision on the recognition of a document (nostrification) on the completion of secondary education by the relevant institution in the Slovak Republic with the application for higher education, or at the latest upon enrolment for studies.
A foreign applicant shall submit a certificate of the required B1 language level, according to the European Language Reference Framework, in the Slovak language. In the event that he/she does not have such a certificate, he/she shall take a test on the date of the admission examination to determine the required level of the Slovak language as stated above. The test will be prepared, conducted and evaluated by the Institute of Lifelong Learning of the University of Žilina in Žilina.

Applicants shall fill the Application for Undergraduate Studies - 1st Degree form or use the electronic form. The electronic application form can be filled in via the UNIZA website https://vzdelavanie.uniza.sk/prijimacky/index.php or the University portal https://prihlaskavs.sk/sk/. In the case of electronic application, it is necessary to follow the instructions given in the Electronic Application System.

If the application form is incomplete, the applicant will be asked to complete it.

In case of non-participation or failure in the admission procedure, the Institute will not refund the admission fee.

If a candidate wishes to participate in the admission procedure at several faculties or programmes of the faculty of UNIZA, the application must be submitted separately for each faculty and programme with payment of the appropriate fee.
