Prospects of graduates
Graduates of the Master’s degree program in English Language and Culture possess a broad theoretical and methodological foundation in translation theory and praxeology, and are proficient in the use of state-of-the-art technologies that facilitate the work of translators and interpreters. The skills acquired during the Master’s program enable graduates to find employment in translation agencies, cultural institutions, non-profit NGOs, and various enterprises focused on international cooperation. Graduates are proficient in simultaneous and consecutive interpreting at a professional level. They are also capable of translating specialized or literary texts to a high stylistic and professional standard, utilizing modern technologies to enhance the translation process. They are skilled in using computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools and quality assurance software, and understand the fundamental principles of post-editing. Thanks to coursework in translation praxeology, they possess an understanding of the translation and interpreting market, enabling them to operate independently within the field upon graduation. Upon completing their studies, they are prepared to work as translators and interpreters involving the English language.

Conditions of admission
English Language and Culture
Admission to this programme requires English language proficiency at the C1 level or higher according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and completed bachelor’s studies in the field of study Philology or Teacher Training and Education Science.
Applicants must demonstrate the required English proficiency level by holding a bachelor’s degree in an English-language-oriented programme or submitting any of the following credentials:
– University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, Certificate in Advanced English
– University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, Certificate of Proficiency in English
– IELTS – International English Language Testing System – min. Band 7
If the number of applicants exceeds the programme’s capacity, applicants will be ranked based on their weighted average mark from their bachelor’s studies.
Foreign applicants to this programme who have completed their bachelor’s studies in a language other than Slovak must also demonstrate Slovak language proficiency at the B2 level or higher, demonstrated by a certificate of Slovak language proficiency.
Conditions for international students
Basic admission requirements for foreign applicants to master’s studies:
‒ completed bachelor’s or master’s studies, demonstrated by a decision to recognize the education credential at the required level earned outside Slovakia (except for credentials earned in Czechia; those do not require recognition)
Applicants for master’s studies who have completed their previous education in a country that does not have a recognition clause with Slovakia must send the original or a notarized copy of the decision to recognize their higher-education credential (school-leaving-exam certificate) attained outside Slovakia. Information on the recognition of higher-education credentials can be found at the website of Slovakia’s Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth (https://uznavanie.minedu.sk/en/navigator/10) or on the UMB website
(https://www.umb.sk/en/studies/information/recognition-of-the-evidence-of-formal-qualifications/).
If an applicant for master’s studies who has completed their previous education abroad does not, by the specified deadline, deliver the original/notarized copy of the decision recognizing their higher-education credential attained outside Slovakia and/or does not, by the specified deadline for admission requirement fulfilment verification, deliver the Slovak-language-proficiency certificate at the required level, they will be accepted conditionally. Applicants must present these documents by the day of enrolment at the latest; otherwise they cannot enrol as a student.

For all applicants, the admissions process begins by submitting an application. Applicants may apply for multiple programmes, but they must submit a separate application for each programme. There is no limit on the number of submitted applications per applicant. Applications are submitted electronically via the central web-based application system. The Faculty of Arts will accept electronic applications with or without validated electronic signatures.
The application must include:
- the applicant’s CV
- a notarized copy of the applicant’s bachelor’s-level state examination diploma (applies to applicants for master's programmes who have completed their bachelor’s studies)
- a copy of the applicant’s bachelor’s diploma supplement or, if they have not yet completed their bachelor’s studies, the transcript of records from their bachelor’s studies (this applies to master’s-programme applicants from other universities)
- a certificate of fitness from a doctor (applies to physical education programmes)
- a certificate of proficiency in Slovak as a foreign/second language at the required level (at least B2 or C1 depending on the study programme criteria) issued by a language school included in the network of schools and educational institutions of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic (registered public language schools and private language schools) – required for foreign applicants to master’s programmes who studied in a language other than Slovak at the bachelor’s level

Applicants must deliver a notarized copy of their bachelor’s diploma or confirmation of their completed bachelor’s studies (in the case of applicants for master’s studies from higher-education institutions other than UMB) by the day of enrolment at the latest; otherwise, they cannot enrol as a student.
