Slovak History

The study program enables students to develop advanced competences in the theory and philosophy of history, as well as in analytical and interpretative work with sources and texts. It places strong emphasis on critical and logical evaluation, scholarly argumentation, and the cultivation of creative, well-structured oral and written expression. During the key first two years of study, the compulsory methodological seminar constitutes the core component of the curriculum. Through a set of broadly defined thematic areas – such as nationalism and its social practice, modernization, social stereotypes, discourse analysis, the politics of memory, and history and ideology – the seminar presents diverse interpretative perspectives and methodological approaches. At the same time, it fosters students’ ability to abstract, compare, and critically assess texts, to engage in scholarly discussion and argumentation (including in a major world language), and to work purposefully with academic apparatus and genres (paper, presentation, review).
A broad range of compulsory elective and optional courses enables students to develop their individual specialization within a diverse contextual framework. Students are evaluated annually by the program board, with particular attention paid to academic results, research progress, and cooperation with their supervisor. The same evaluative approach applies to students specializing in auxiliary historical sciences (both classical and modern), the history of administration and archival studies, as well as museology, monument studies, and cultural heritage.
Students enrolled in the full-time mode of study also undertake teaching-related responsibilities, including the assessment of final theses, the delivery of elective seminars, and the authorship or co-authorship of teaching materials. An important component of the program are the study stays abroad, which will undoubtedly significantly improve the quality of doctoral dissertations and contribute to the overall scholarly development of students.
More detailed information about the study program is available at the web https://fphil.uniba.sk/en/study/study-programmes/doctoral-studies/slovak-history-x/.
The study program enables graduates to acquire advanced competences in the theory and philosophy of history, as well as in analytical and interpretative work with sources and texts, critical and logical evaluation, scholarly argumentation, and creative, well-cultivated oral and written expression. Graduates develop strong heuristic and critical skills, demonstrate mastery of specialized academic discourse, and are able to critically advance it.
Graduates of this type of program are particularly well prepared for positions such as research scholars at academic and university institutions, as well as managerial and leadership roles in archival, cultural, and memory institutions, supported by a broad range of practical and theoretical knowledge. Building on historical expertise with an extension into political science (especially through specialization in contemporary history), graduates may also successfully pursue careers in state foreign services and find wide application in the media sector. Further career opportunities include positions in methodological centers with nationwide scope and in institutions—particularly those focused on earlier historical periods—that represent Slovak cultural heritage.
Specialization in auxiliary historical sciences provides competences for professional research careers in auxiliary historical disciplines, history, archival studies, archaeology, museology, and historical art history. Graduates are able to independently carry out research, publication, information-related, and other complex professional tasks in research institutes, higher education institutions, archives, museums, galleries, and in local-history, consultancy, educational, and related institutions. They master research methods in the auxiliary historical sciences, the history of administration, and archival studies, grounded in the current state of scholarly knowledge.
Specialization in museology enables students to acquire advanced mastery of museological research methods, with a focus on contemporary trends in museology, museum practice, and monument studies, including the active protection of cultural heritage. Graduates specialize in selected areas of museology, monument studies, and cultural heritage, conduct independent scholarly research, and contribute original solutions to problems in these fields.
