Social work

The profiling of a graduate of the social work study programme is based on the assumption that the student should master the following professional activities:

  • Identify, correct and solve social problems;
  • Facilitate and coordinate the collaboration of all stakeholders in solving social problems;
  • To carry out activities in the field of prevention, emergence and recurrence of social problems;
  • Promote effective social policy change at institutional, local, regional and national levels;
  • Support the client's potential, ability to take responsibility for themselves and their environment;
  • Stimulate social cohesion;
  • Actively engage in the development of scientific knowledge in the field of social work;
  • Manage the activities of work teams;

Social work as a professional activity for the benefit of the client is implemented in practice in a hierarchical system dominated by five levels:

  1. Occupational
  2. Independently professional
  3. Expert (specialists)
  4. Managerial
  5. Scientific

The study programme of social work for the master's form of study represents a standard length of study of 2 years.



Prospects of graduates

The social work study programme prepares professionals for the profession of social worker. This profession is considered to be key in the field of social services. Graduates of the master's degree programme will be employed as social workers in all state and local government organisations, as social workers in health care, education, in the Department of Labour, Social Affairs and Family, as social workers in non-state and religious organisations providing social services, as managers in all organisations providing social services, as workers who guide and support the professional development of new and novice workers and provide practical teaching in workplaces, as a teacher at higher vocational social schools, but also as a researcher and analyst in institutions dealing with social problems at local, regional and central level (children's homes, old people's homes, penal and detention institutions, re-education centres, asylums, crisis centres, in health care institutions - hospitals, spas, sanatoriums, hospitals for the long-term sick, hospices, but also in international institutions such as UNICEF, UNHCR, etc.).).

Conditions of admission

The number of admitted students for the academic year 2023/2024 may be adjusted according to the interest in studies and the possibilities of the PF KU.
Admission Requirements:
- for the study programme Teaching for Primary Education, the basic condition of admission is the completion of a bachelor's degree in the study programme Preschool and Elementary Education;
- for the study programme Teaching of Physical Education (single subject/in combination), the basic condition of admission is the completion of the same bachelor's/master's degree programme;
- for other study programmes, the completion of the same or a related bachelor's/master's degree programme (definition of related fields of study: www.accreditation.sk);
- commitment to respect the Catholic spirit of the university and the faculty;
- for teacher study programmes in art education, music education and musical arts (piano, organ or solo singing), the successful completion of a talent test is a prerequisite (see the talent test section);
- other study programmes - without a talent test;
- those applicants who best meet the established admission requirements will be admitted to the study;
- all applicants who have achieved a grade lower than D in the state final examination during their Bachelor's studies must take part in the admission examination in the field of study.
The ranking of applicants will be based on the following rules:
▪ The ranking of applicants will be based on the results achieved in the bachelor's studies (average of the state examination).
▪ In the case of talent examinations, the ranking will be calculated as follows: 50% for the results in the bachelor's studies and 50% for the talent examination.
▪ If more than one applicant meets the admission requirements for a given study programme, those applicants who have demonstrated the highest level of aptitude for the study according to the admission requirements will be admitted.

General information on the admission exam

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ADMISSION PROCEDURE
In case the applicant wishes to apply for more than one study programme, he/she has to apply for each study programme separately.
The application must be accompanied by:
- CV;
- certified copy of diploma and certificate from bachelor's studies;
- proof of payment of the fee, which has to be pasted on the 3rd page of the application form. Without proof of payment, the application will not be registered. The admission fee is non-refundable;
- the applicant for the study programme Teaching for Primary Education shall submit a medical certificate of the ability to take physical education without limitations and a certificate from a professional employee - speech therapist that the applicant does not have impaired communication skills;
- the applicant for the study programme Teaching for Physical Education shall also submit a medical certificate of medical fitness https://www.ku.sk/app/cmsSiteBoxAttachment.php?ID=6946&cmsDataID=0 ;
- an applicant for the study programme Special Education and Education of the Mentally Handicapped shall submit a certificate from a professional employee - speech therapist that the applicant does not have impaired communication skills;
- applicants who require specific conditions for health reasons shall inform the faculty about this when submitting their application;
- in the case of applicants who have obtained their first degree abroad, a decision on the recognition of the foreign document of education for academic purposes (more information on the website of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic: http://minedu.
Confirmation of the registration of the application and information on the further process in the admission procedure will be sent to applicants in writing. In case of a low number of applicants for the study of teaching in one of the subject combinations, the faculty will propose applicants to study in other combinations.

The Art Talent Examination consists of two parts: theoretical and practical. Theoretical knowledge is demonstrated in the exam in art history, which focuses on historical or contemporary issues in the visual arts. The practical exam consists of active creative work, which is carried out in each studio, i.e. the studio of intermedia, design and craft, surface art disciplines, spatial art disciplines. The candidate will take a practical examination on a topic that is announced at the time of the entrance examination. The practical examination includes a presentation of a portfolio from each art studio.
