Geological engineering
The given field of study encompasses knowledge related to the acquisition, processing, utilization, and protection of natural (earth) resources. Natural resources include raw material and energy resources located in the Earth’s crust, on its surface, on the seabed and ocean floor, in underground and surface waters, and in the Earth’s atmosphere. The identification of these resources, technologies for their extraction and processing, as well as the associated technical, informational, geological, economic, entrepreneurial, managerial, control, production, and logistics processes and knowledge form an integral part of the field of study. The study programme expands knowledge in the area of geological exploration of the Earth’s crust, significantly reflecting new methodological approaches applicable in geological exploration. Graduates master the geological evaluation of prospective accumulations of metallic, non-metallic, and energy raw material resources and acquire broader regional-geological perspectives related to mineral resources, including geological principles of the distribution of unconventional resources, such as geothermal energy. They are proficient in methods of exploration and prospecting of mineral deposits, principles of engineering geology, and the design, management, and evaluation of geological works. Graduates gain experience in analyzing geological data for use in mining geology and geological exploration and adopt a comprehensive approach to the optimal solution of exploration and mining-geological tasks. They are capable of designing and defending projects focused on the exploration and valuation of raw material resources. Students develop spatial reasoning skills with effective translation into graphical outputs, particularly maps and cross-sections, which are fundamental in geology. Under field conditions, graduates can mathematically and graphically analyze problems using computational tools. In engineering-geological activities, they are able to assess the rock environment, its qualitative indicators, and the processes occurring within it. Graduates find employment in basic and applied geological research and exploration, exploration, design, and mining organizations, in the marketing of mineral resources, and in public administration.
