Timber and wood structures
Graduate Profile
Graduates of the Wooden Structures program will acquire the knowledge necessary for the design, manufacture, and construction of timber structures, including roof structures, architectural woodwork, and other wood products, using computer-aided design (CAD, BIM) and (CNC machine tools). They will deepen their knowledge of the unique properties of wood and wood-based materials, as well as the technologies for processing them, which are necessary for their application in wooden structures, as well as knowledge of economics and business/operations management, and related marketing strategies.
Graduates of the Timber Structures program possess the following practical abilities and skills:
- They are able to independently and creatively solve tasks related to the technical design and construction of timber structures, as well as prepare documentation for comprehensive structural designs of timber structures and wood products, including individual component designs: structural engineering, thermal engineering, and individual manufacturing processes, as well as the relevant drawing documentation—all using computer technology,
- has a command of the basics of using computer-numerically controlled (CNC) woodworking machines for the production of wooden structures,
- participates in the pre-production preparation of timber structures, carpentry products, and other woodworking products,
- is able to stay abreast of developments in their field both domestically and internationally,
- uses communication skills to contribute effectively to creative teams in the design, implementation, technology, and marketing of timber structures both domestically and internationally.
Prospects of graduates
Graduates of the “Wooden Structures” program will find employment primarily as structural engineers and designers of wooden buildings and products, in pre-production planning, and in project management as construction supervisors. Graduates can find employment ranging from small operations, family-owned businesses, and independent contractors specializing in the construction of wooden structures to large companies dominating the market for this commodity. They can also work as specialists in the trade of wood products, in the management of technological processes and production operations focused on the utilization of wood as a renewable domestic natural resource in the construction industry. This wide range of career opportunities is further expanded by the possibility of working in quality control and testing departments, as well as in expert assessment. Given the focus of the specialized courses, graduates may also pursue independent entrepreneurial activities in the construction and furniture industries, specifically in the areas of commercial and business operations.
