- The study programme welfare and protection of animals is aimed at mastering theoretical knowledge in the field of environmental protection related to animal husbandry. The student will learn the methods of environmental sanitation, disinfection, disinsection and extermination in animal husbandry, learn the principles of water protection, water resources, gain knowledge of the tasks of health management in animal husbandry, the use and processing of organic waste in terms of their use for fertilization of pastures and soil in the framework of veterinary care for the environment and public health, gain an overview of the legislation governing the breeding and possession of farm, companion, wild, used for experimental purposes, which are mainly aimed at their protection and well-being. Gain knowledge of animal behaviour.
Prospects of graduates
A graduate of the Animal Welfare and Protection degree programme can be employed as an animal welfare inspector (inspection of farmed and pet animal farms) or as an environmental inspector, as a highly specialised professional in breeding facilities for the breeding of animals for use in experiments, as a highly specialised professional with a remit for experimental menageries, zoos and institutions dealing with the keeping of abandoned and handicapped animals, as an employee of state administration bodies in the veterinary field (police, army, rescue and fire brigades), within the competence of municipalities and cities as an indispensable expert for solving animal protection issues and problems related to the keeping and breeding of animals, as a service provider in the field of physiotherapy and rehabilitation of animals, as a highly qualified expert in research organisations and laboratories, in secondary and higher education institutions dealing with animal welfare and protection issues, etc.

An applicant who has completed the first cycle of university studies in the field of veterinary medicine (preferably) may be admitted. The study programme Animal Welfare is open for continuation of studies at the second cycle of higher education also for related study programmes of another university. To be considered for admission to the programme, a positive opinion is required from the committee, which will assess the suitability of the applicant on the basis of a comparison of the curricula of the first degree programme taken at the university. Admission will be determined on the basis of the weighted average of the applicant's previous studies.
Conditions for international students
Admission conditions are the same as for Slovak applicants.
Another condition for foreign applicants to study in Slovak language is knowledge of Slovak language at least at B1 level. Candidates must prove their knowledge of the language by a certificate confirming their proficiency at the above level, or complete a Slovak language course organised by a third party for the needs of the UVLF in Košice before starting their studies.
The Slovak language level is not required for applicants with a prior knowledge of the language.
