General Linguistics

The study program focuses on specialized training and on deepening theoretical, methodological, and historical knowledge relevant to the professional preparation of a linguist in the broad sense. It is content-wise and structurally linked to the second cycle of higher education completed within the field of study 11 Philology. The program targets both general linguistics and the specific language under study. The general linguistic component emphasizes the principles of how language functions, linguistic systems, methodological approaches to analyzing linguistic phenomena, current linguistic directions and theoretical trends, as well as the history of linguistics and the application of linguistic theory in practice. Graduates gain a deeper understanding of the theoretical foundations of linguistic research and of the meaning and role of theoretical linguistics. They are able to assess the contribution of different theoretical approaches to their own research focus. They acquire an in-depth knowledge of the structure, development, typology, stratification, variability, language area, language policies and ideologies, and contemporary tendencies of the selected language, as well as current research concepts, methods, and innovations. They understand the place of linguistics within a wider disciplinary framework, given the multifunctionality of language and its links to other fields. Graduates are prepared to solve research problems independently and creatively and to engage in teaching and academic activity at higher education and research institutions, both nationally and internationally.
