Art Studies

The study program focuses on advanced specialization and on deepening historical, theoretical-systematic, and methodological knowledge, as well as key aspects of the professional training of experts – musicologists, art historians, aestheticians of art, or, more broadly, theorists of artistic culture. In terms of content, structure, and profile, it organically builds on second-cycle (Master’s level) education obtained in study programs within the field of study Arts and Culture Studies.
The program concentrates on selected issues in the history and theory of art and artistic culture, with specialization in specific historical periods, genre- and form-based categories, and regional contexts. It further develops the theoretical and methodological foundations of the respective disciplines and directs attention to selected scholarly problems, with particular emphasis on their philosophical and historical grounding.
Students develop the ability to address research problems independently and creatively, as well as to design and implement development programs in the field of art and artistic culture within professional cultural institutions. Another objective of the program is the mastery of a wide range of interpretative methods and approaches, including various types of exegetical interpretation and the analysis of artistic forms.
Graduates are also prepared for academic teaching at higher education institutions and for scholarly engagement within academic institutions and platforms, both in domestic and international contexts. With regard to dissertation topics and individual research orientations, the program emphasizes individual specialization while maintaining a shared educational framework defined primarily by compulsory courses.
More detailed information about the study program is available at the web https://fphil.uniba.sk/en/study/study-programmes/doctoral-studies/art-studies/.
The study program is primarily conceived as preparation for research professionals in the field of art-historical scholarship. Graduates are also prepared to assume conceptual roles in the sphere of artistic culture and to engage in academic teaching.
Based on the knowledge and skills acquired, graduates are qualified for professional practice in Slovakia and abroad, particularly in the following positions:
- independent research scholar in an academic environment (universities, the Slovak Academy of Sciences, etc.) or in a specialized memory institution,
- independent creative professional in the field of artistic culture, such as a dramaturge in music or musical theatre, or a curator in the field of visual arts, working in state-funded and publicly established institutions as well as in the independent cultural sector (civic associations, foundations, etc.),
- academic teaching staff at a higher education institution.
