Slovak Language

The study program focuses on deepening engagement with both basic and applied research on the Slovak language, with emphasis on assessing its current state in relation to societal needs and contemporary linguistic trends. Attention is given to developing the ability to identify current research topics in Slovak linguistics, to conceptualize them in the form of scholarly research projects, and, on this basis, to define one’s position within potential research teams.
The program places strong emphasis on developing the ability to interpret and critically analyze linguistic texts, reconstruct their conceptual structure, and examine their logical organization as expressions of specific approaches to the scholarly treatment of linguistic reality. A significant component of the program is the cultivation of metatheoretical reflection, enabling the evaluation of research outcomes on the Slovak language within applied theoretical and methodological frameworks, their critical assessment, and the formulation of conclusions aimed at advancing linguistic knowledge through methodological innovation.
The program also concentrates on the philosophical foundations of contemporary linguistics and their reflection in Slovak linguistic scholarship, as well as on further developing skills in the use of quantitative and qualitative research methods. Particular attention is paid to the ability to assess the relevance of collected data and to technically manage their processing and application.
The program further includes the applied dimension of linguistic research, especially in the areas of language education, the cultivation of the use of the Slovak language, and engagement in social-science communication with the public that goes beyond traditional forms of popularization.
More detailed information about the study program is available at the web https://fphil.uniba.sk/en/study/study-programmes/doctoral-studies/slovak-language-x/.
Graduates are primarily prepared to apply their acquired linguistic competences in academia, education, research, and in professional fields that require an exceptionally high standard of linguistic expertise and language-related outputs. Typical positions include research and academic roles (linguist, language expert), teaching positions at university departments with a philological focus, quality coordinators for language translation (especially into Slovak), terminologists, secondary-school teachers, and lecturers of Slovak as a foreign language at academic Slavonic studies departments abroad.
Graduates of the programme are also prepared to work as highly specialised linguists and Slovakists in domestic and international linguistic organisations (such as the Slovak Terminology Network, the International Committee of Slavists, and EFNIL), as well as as members of advisory bodies of public administration (for example, the Terminology Commission or the Central Language Council at the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic).
