Literary Science

The study program focuses on advanced specialization and on deepening historical, theoretical-systematic, and methodological knowledge, as well as aspects of the professional training of a literary scholar—specifically a literary historian, literary theorist, or literary comparatist. In terms of content, structure, and profile, it organically builds upon second-cycle (Master’s level) education completed in study programs within the field of Philology. The program concentrates on selected issues in the history and theory of literature, with specialization in specific national literatures, their historical periods, literary movements, and genre-based classifications. It further develops the theoretical and methodological foundations of the discipline and directs attention to the study of selected scholarly problems, with emphasis on their aesthetic, philosophical-historical, and literary-theoretical underpinnings. Students learn to address scholarly problems independently and creatively, as well as to design and implement various innovative programs in the field of literature and artistic culture within professional research and cultural institutions. Another objective of the program is the mastery of a full range of interpretative methods and approaches, including various types of exegetical interpretation and analysis of literary texts. Graduates are also prepared for academic teaching at higher education institutions, within academic institutions and other platforms, both in domestic and international contexts.
More detailed information about the study program is available at the web https://fphil.uniba.sk/en/study/study-programmes/doctoral-studies/literary-science/.
The study program is primarily focused on the preparation of research professionals in the field of literary studies. Graduates are also prepared to work as experts in literary and editorial culture and to engage in various forms of literary education.
Thanks to the knowledge and skills acquired, graduates may pursue professional careers both in Slovakia and abroad, particularly in the following positions:
- independent research scholar in an academic environment (universities, the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and other specialized institutions),
- independent creative professional in the field of literary and editorial culture, such as editor or managing editor in publishing houses, editor or dramaturge in radio, television, or theatre, as well as in the independent cultural sector (civic associations, foundations, and similar organizations),
- academic teaching staff at higher education institutions.
