Materials
The study program gives graduates the ability to understand the relationship between the chemical-physical nature of the phase composition, structure and properties of selected materials from an enormous number of metallic, non-metallic structural and functional materials and composites. Based on these skills, the graduate can develop innovative technological processes for the production and processing of selected materials, find suitable possibilities for their application and predict the degradation of their properties and the lifetime. Education in this study program gives graduates the disposition to independently manage the tasks of research and development of materials, and to lead and coordinate researcher’s teams of research, development and innovation projects, and to participate in the educational process in the given field with the necessary professional overview.
Prospects of graduates
The goals of the education of the graduates of this study program are to acquire deep knowledge about selected materials from an enormous number of different types of structural and functional materials, about their chemical concept, crystal structure and the physical nature of their mechanical and functional properties. The goal is also to achieve adequate knowledge of related topics of natural (chemical) sciences. The graduate should be able to creatively use the acquired knowledge for the solution of application, technological and conceptual projects to produce selected materials that go beyond the scope of the engineering approach, as well as for realizing the research and development of materials of this type and for creating, developing and deepening new knowledge in the field of mechanical engineering. The goal of graduate education is also the acquisition of the skills to be able to choose specific and appropriate scientific methods in the field of material sciences for basic and applied research of the chemical concept, structure and properties of materials, processing of materials, degradation and limit states of materials and prediction of their behaviour in various conditions. The graduate will acquire the disposition to creatively apply his own findings obtained from following the latest trends in material sciences and research and his complex research and in the independent solution of scientific tasks and the most demanding tasks of technical practice in the field of mechanical engineering. Based on the acquired knowledge, he can design, verify and implement new research and work procedures. One of the main goals of the education of the graduate of the study program is the acquisition of the ability to formulate new hypotheses and strategies for further research in the field of various types of materials and the development of the field of study. He will acquire analytical skills and master the chosen research methods and use them in the development and research of new materials and technologies for their production and processing. He can carry out analysis and research projects, modelling, simulations, measurement, collection and processing of data using modern information resources and analytical techniques. The goal of the education is also to form independent, critical and analytical graduate thinking, which he will be able to apply in the dynamically changing conditions of mechanical engineering and metallurgical production and material research. The graduate should be able to independently present the results of research and development in the field of material sciences in the national and international professional community and in valuable scientific periodicals in a foreign language. He will take social, scientific and ethical aspects into account when he will formulate research and development objectives and when he will interpret their results. The graduate can determine the focus of research and development of materials, innovate them, coordinate and manage the working and scientific-research team in the relevant production and scientific field. He will also acquire basic theoretical and practical experience for professional pedagogical activities and will be able to use them in professional education at secondary schools and technical universities in the field of mechanical engineering and materials engineering. The graduate understands the relationship between the physic-chemical concept of structure and properties of selected materials from a few different types of structural and functional materials, based on which he can influence their changes in a targeted manner. He can also predict their limit states and lifetime based on knowledge of the processes of chemical and mechanical degradation of these materials. In the development and research of various materials, he can apply modern structural and phase analysi of materials, methods of analysing their properties and degradation.
The graduate can actively acquire, critically evaluate and analyse new knowledge and information, apply it in the solution of materials production projects, their research and development. As part of research and development, he can independently formulate new hypotheses and strategies, realise his own scientific and professional activity, assess and modify it, interpret its results regarding the long-term impact in the given field, as well as social, scientific and ethical aspects. He can design, implement and improve research, development and innovation procedures in the field of materials and their processing. He can demonstrate the contribution of his own original research to the expansion of scientific knowledge in the study field by formulating and publishing his original results not only at the domestic workplace, but also at the international level and in a foreign language. He can independently manage the tasks of research and development of materials, lead and coordinate their research teams. He can convey the acquired knowledge in a suitable way also within the educational process in professional subjects from the field of materials.
