Nursing care

The content and length of the study correspond to the European Union Directives No. 77/452 EEC, 77/453 EEC, 81/1057 EEC on the regulated profession of a nurse. The first level of university education in the bachelor´s degree study programme in the field of Nursing Care lasts in full-time form 3 years (i.e. 6 semesters) and includes 4600 hours of teaching, of which the theoretical part of teaching represents at least one third and the practical part at least one half of teaching.

Students gain knowledge of medical and human science branches, which are closely related and help students to comprehend the natural relations that are going on in the human bio-psychosocial environment. This study is designed in such way that the student gradually gains knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the human body and thus comprehend the pathological processes which are occurring during individual diseases. The students need to know the behaviour of both healthy and diseased human being, ethics of this profession, legislation, general principles of nursing practice and gain clinical experience from professional workplaces under the expert supervision of health care professionals.

Based on the theoretical part of the teaching, students gain the knowledge necessary for the organization, planning, evaluation and providing of complex nursing care. It is performed in educational institutions which are specialized in training of nurses and it is arranged mostly by teachers, who are qualified for the performance of professional activities in the medical profession of a nurse. The theoretical part of teaching is equal to and coordinated with the practical part so that the student can apply the theoretical knowledge in practice,  adopt a stance on them,  search for the answers to his or her questions and get the latest methods and ways of work. Based on the practical part of the teaching, the students gain abilities how to plan, provide and evaluate the required nursing care  in interaction with a healthy or diseased individual or community, they learn how to work in a team and lead such a team, organize nursing care including health education for individuals and small groups in health care facilities or for communities. Teaching takes place in hospitals and other health care facilities and in communities under the professional supervision of teachers, who are professionally qualified for the performance of professional activities in the medical profession of a nurse. Other qualified personnel may be also involved in the teaching process. Students work at relevant clinical facilities, where they have the opportunity to acquaint with the organization, system and specifics of the work, what contributes to their professional education and enable them to learn how to assume responsibility connected with the nursing care. The study also includes compulsory clinical and summer practice.



Prospects of graduates

Graduates of the bachelor study programme acquire professional qualification for providing nursing care and are able to meet the requirements of this field, which incorporates nursing care theories with the scientific knowledge of other branches and practice. Nursing care is aimed at the individual fulfilment and evaluation of nursing needs of the individual, family and community. It provides necessary information about health promotion and maintenance of the healthy, diseased, handicapped and dying person. Graduate of the bachelor study programme provides continuous nursing care in the form of the nursing process in all types at all levels of health care facilities. It educates and protects the rights of the individual, family and community in relation to the provision of nursing care. It follows the existing legislation that is necessary for the performance of the nursing profession. Knowledge standards: knows the theory and uses the nursing terminology in practice, has knowledge of nursing care theory, nursing techniques, clinical medical disciplines and the basics of social and behavioural sciences, masters the concepts of health education and strategic health promotion documents, identifies and specifies determinants, which have impact on the health, person, environment and nursing practice, is theoretically prepared and works in practice using the method of nursing process, can integrate knowledge of theory and models in nursing and apply them in nursing practice, is able to think independently, reacts promptly.

Skills standards: masters practical working procedures in diagnostic, medical and nursing activities, uses new technologies in nursing practice based on acquired psychomotor, cognitive and affective skills, abilities, introduces new technologies and procedures into nursing clinical practice, provides professional nursing practice based on evidence, uses models, assessment scales for assessment of health and health state of a client, analyses problems and makes decisions in cooperation with clients to optimize the client´s health state, uses communication skills within the medical team, in attitude to the individual, family and community, makes progress and is professionally developing in the relevant field, adheres to the ethical principles given in the Code of Ethics of Nurses.

A graduate of this study filed gains a basic qualification for the profession of a nurse. She or he can find employment as a nurse in nursing practice at inpatient departments of medical facilities, in primary health care, in home nursing care agencies and participates in the management of nursing care and nursing education.

Conditions of admission

The fundamental condition for admission to the study programme in the field of study Nursing Care, as defined by the Article 56, Act No. 131/2002 on higher education, is completed secondary education or completed secondary specialised education.

The application form includes:

- curriculum vitae

- confirmation of the admissions fee payment

- medical certificate of eligibility for university studies

- certified copies of the annual school reports and the secondary school-leaving certificate

(applicants graduating in the school year 2019/2020 have to have the study results for the 1st – 3rd year confirmed by the secondary school)

-  certified copies of the certificate for the 4th year and the secondary school-leaving certificate, will applicants send until the June 12, 2020)

To the electronic application must be attached the printed form of application with a signature.

If the applicant doesn´t complete the missing parts of the application within the set deadline after being requested to do so, he/she is excluded from the admission procedure. The admission fee will not be refunded.



Conditions for international students

Applicants, who have completed  secondary education at school abroad, shall submit certificate of education certified by a notary.  The requirements for admitting students from foreign countries are the same as for students who are citizens of the Slovak Republic.
