The graduate of the 3rd degree of university studies in the field of classical archaeology has a deep theoretical and practical knowledge in the relevant specialization (according to the chosen topic of the doctoral thesis), has the ability of further growth and independent creative scientific work.
He/she is able to solve complex questions of theoretical research and to use practical experience.
Knows how to make critical use of the literature and the results of interdisciplinary research.
Knows how to conduct field archaeological research independently at a professional level and use achievable modern methods. Can handle archaeological material and use it for the purposes of interpretation and for the synthesis of the problem under study.
Knowledge of at least two world languages and proficiency in computer technology at the required level is essential for the study of foreign literature, the exchange of scientific information and wider international cooperation.
Prospects of graduates
The breadth and depth of the acquired knowledge enable him to work as an independent researcher in scientific institutes, galleries and museums, as well as in other cultural institutions. He is also ready to transfer the acquired knowledge in the teaching process at philosophical faculties or other higher education institutions.

The selection procedure is based on the previous study results, the professional examination and the professional interview on the applied dissertation topic, taking into account the results of the previous education. Applications from graduates of the study programme or related study programmes will be accepted. The admissions committee decides on the acceptance of the application.

FF TU offers its students accommodation, the services of the university library, departmental libraries, a range of specialised classrooms and departments such as video presentation classrooms, multimedia classrooms, a multifunctional auditorium, a PhD students' office, a Communication Centre, a central IT system, a Modular Academic Information System, a University Pastoral Centre, psychological counselling services, a university canteen, and a number of other support services.

Applicants who have completed a lower level of studies abroad shall submit proof of equivalence of studies at secondary schools abroad pursuant to Act No.422/2015 Coll. on the recognition of documents on education and on the recognition of professional qualifications and on the amendment and supplementation of certain acts.

The Faculty of Arts at Trnava University in Trnava (hereinafter “TU”) plans to admit approximately 1 student to the doctoral program in the 2027/2028 academic year, subject to the amount of allocated budgetary funds and the fulfillment of the basic and additional admission requirements.
The appropriate application form must be used to apply for the program.
A basic requirement for admission to the doctoral program (PhD degree) is completion of a second-cycle university degree.
The Faculty of Arts at TU reserves the right to make any necessary changes and updates in order to improve the admissions process, in accordance with Section 69(6) of Act No. 300/2025 Coll. on Higher Education Institutions, as amended.
Applicants must submit an electronic application. Applicants who completed a lower level of study prior to the 2026/2027 academic year must include a scanned copy of a certified diploma supplement and their Master’s degree diploma with their application. Applicants who will complete a lower-level degree in 2027 must submit their application electronically along with a current certificate of enrollment. Applicants who are taking the entrance exam must submit officially certified documents (Master’s degree diploma and diploma supplement) in person upon check-in on the day of the entrance exam.
The admissions process for applicants begins on the date their application is received. The application must include the required attachments (proof of payment of the admission fee, a certified Master’s degree, or proof of school attendance, a resume, outline of a project, and a list of publications or other extracurricular activities).
Applicants who are admitted on the basis of a competitive selection process must submit officially certified copies of their transcripts within two days of successfully passing the state examination.
The faculty does not require a medical certificate from the applicant. If necessary, it may take a disability into account during the admissions exam; the applicant must attach to the application a certificate of disability and a recommendation regarding the format of the exam.
Applicants may submit multiple applications to the faculty. A new application must be submitted for each study program, and the €40 fee must be paid again for each application.
Applicants who have completed a lower level of study abroad must submit recognized educational documents in accordance with the provisions of Decree No. 422/2015 Coll. The receipt for payment of the admission fee (in the amount of €40) must be affixed to page 3 of the application form. The fee is non-refundable if the applicant does not take the entrance exam. The admissions committee determines the minimum score required for admission.
