Classical Archaeology

The Department of Classical Archaeology was established in 1997 as the only workplace in Slovakia providing education in this field of study. Teaching focuses on the art, history, culture and archaeology of ancient Greece, Rome and the Roman provinces. It also covers the Aegean Bronze Age (Minoan and Mycenaean civilisations), the history of antiquity (Egypt and the Near East) and the archaeology of the peripheral regions of the ancient world (Scythians, Celts, Thracians, Cimmerians). Courses in classical Greek and Latin, as well as contemporary world languages, are part of the curriculum. A specific feature of the study is the comparison of the development of prehistoric Europe with the advanced civilizations of the Aegean region. Its aim is to show the interrelationships and influence of ancient Greece and Rome on historical developments in barbarism. Special emphasis is also placed on the Danubian provinces. The programme of study includes fieldwork in archaeological research and a professional excursion.
Graduates of classical archaeology are prepared to handle tasks of a theoretical and practical nature. He/she is capable of independent scientific work and solving theoretical problems. He/she is able to provide field archaeological research on a professional level and to use modern methods and techniques. The graduate is expected to have a good knowledge of archaeological material. The student is able to interpret the archaeological material and the uncovered objects, to place them in a broader context and to use them for synthesis. Knowledge of at least two world languages is essential for wider international cooperation and the acquisition of the latest scientific knowledge and information.

Prospects of graduates

Graduates can find employment in scientific, cultural, educational and outreach institutions. They can work in university departments and in theoretical institutes of the Academy of Sciences with a focus on classical and general archaeology and on the history of art of ancient civilizations. Other possibilities of employment are in museums, galleries, monuments offices and in editors of specialist literature. The focus of the study programme also allows full employment in the field of archaeology of prehistoric and early historic times, especially in the peripheral areas of the ancient world and the Roman provinces. The orientation of the field is also a good prerequisite for work in the broader sphere of institutions whose job requires a humanities education (newspaper, magazine, television, radio). Employment is also possible in the commercial sphere (travel agencies, etc.).
