Conditions of admission

The basic requirement for admission to bachelor’s studies (first degree programme) is the completion of full secondary education or full secondary vocational education (Act on Higher Education No. 131/2002 Coll., as amended).

In the case of a foreign applicant or student who completed secondary education abroad, the education must be comparable to secondary education completed with the secondary school leaving examination in the Slovak Republic. An applicant who obtained secondary education abroad is required to submit, together with the application for higher education studies, or at the latest upon enrolment, a decision on the recognition of the secondary education certificate issued by the competent authority in the Slovak Republic.

Additional information

Applicants who do not meet the conditions for admission without an entrance examination are required to take written tests in general knowledge. The general knowledge test assesses the basic prerequisites and abilities necessary for successful university studies.

The test consists of a quantitative component (simple mathematical word problems, analytical and logical thinking, reasoning, and inference), a language component (the ability to analyse linguistic means of the Slovak language in terms of their grammatical, lexical, and stylistic features, including meaning and form in vocabulary), and a general social awareness component (orientation in current domestic and international events).

Applicants will be admitted on the basis of the results of the admission procedure, ranked according to the total number of points achieved, up to the planned capacity limits. The final decision on the outcome of the admission procedure shall be made by the Dean of the Faculty of Security Engineering of the University of Žilina, based on the proposal of the faculty admission committee. The Dean is authorised to supplement the number of admitted applicants to first-year bachelor’s study programmes up to the planned capacity by admitting applicants who met the admission requirements for another bachelor’s study programme but were not admitted due to capacity limits of the originally selected programme.

For selected bachelor’s study programmes, a second round of the admission procedure will be organised if places remain available. The list of bachelor’s study programmes open for the second round, as well as the application deadline and the date of the admission examination, will be published by 23 June 2026. The admission requirements and the form of the admission procedure for bachelor’s studies are the same as in the first round.

Conditions for international students

For foreign applicants, the same admission requirements apply as for applicants from the Slovak Republic.

Foreign students who study in a language other than the state language are required to pay tuition fees in accordance with Section 92(8) of the Act on Higher Education. The tuition fee is determined by a directive of the University of Žilina and published for the relevant academic year on the university’s website.

Foreign students who study in the Slovak language are not required to pay tuition fees. Applicants from the Czech Republic may use the application form valid in the Czech Republic. Applicants who do not have an active command of the Slovak or Czech language are required to successfully complete a language preparation course (with the option of completing it at the University of Žilina).

For foreign applicants admitted on the basis of intergovernmental agreements, bilateral agreements, or for scholarship holders of the Government of the Slovak Republic, the conditions specified in the relevant documents shall apply.

Language Requirements

For admission to bachelor’s study programmes at the faculty, an adequate level of written and spoken proficiency in Slovak or Czech (equivalent to at least level B1) is required; foreign applicants must provide certified proof of such proficiency. Applicants who do not have an active command of the Slovak or Czech language are required to successfully complete a language preparation course (with the option of completing it at the University of Žilina).

Admission without an Entrance Examination

Admission without an entrance examination shall be granted to:

a) applicants from grammar schools who achieved an arithmetic average grade of up to and including 1.7 on the end-of-year report for the penultimate year of study (excluding the final, graduation year);

b) applicants from secondary vocational schools, combined schools, and academies who achieved an arithmetic average grade of up to and including 1.4 on the end-of-year report for the penultimate year of study (excluding the final, graduation year);

c) applicants who, in the current academic year, completed NPS (SCIO) tests in general study aptitude or mathematics and achieved a percentile score of at least 60;

d) graduates of secondary schools who, during their secondary education, were successful in regional or nationwide rounds of secondary school Olympiads, the Secondary School Professional Activity competition (SOČ), or international and national competitions related to the content of the study programme, and placed within the top five positions.

Fulfilment of at least one of the conditions listed in points (a) to (d) above is sufficient for admission without an entrance examination. All other applicants are required to take an entrance examination.

General information on the admission exam

For admission to bachelor’s studies at the Faculty of Security Engineering of the University of Žilina, a single application is sufficient, provided that the applicant indicates the order of preferred study programmes. If the applicant is interested in both forms of study (full-time and part-time), two separate applications must be submitted, together with two separate admission procedure fees.

Applicants shall complete the form Application for Higher Education Studies – First Cycle or use the electronic application system. The electronic application may be submitted via the University of Žilina website or the national higher education application portal.

In the case of an incomplete application, the applicant will be requested to provide the missing information or documents.

If an applicant does not participate in, or does not successfully pass, the admission procedure, the faculty does not refund the admission procedure fee.

Applicants wishing to participate in the admission procedure at more than one faculty of the University of Žilina must submit a separate application to each faculty and pay the relevant fee for each application.

Proof of Payment: Proof of payment must be sent to the faculty together with the application.

Medical Fitness

The faculty does not require a medical certificate confirming fitness for university studies and accepts applications without a medical certificate for all levels of higher education.

If the number of applicants for a study programme is fewer than ten, the faculty reserves the right not to open the programme.
