The profile of the graduate of the study programme general veterinary medicine is formed during the study mainly for professional activities in the field of state administration, the Chamber of Veterinary Surgeons of the Slovak Republic as a private veterinarian, in the field of laboratory practice, in the private sphere of agriculture, food industry, pharmacy, education, scientific research and environmental protection.

The curriculum is designed in accordance with the Directive 2005/36/EEC and 2013/55/EEC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the recognition of professional qualifications (formerly EU Regulation - 78/1026/EEC and 78/1027/EEC for the so-called regulated professions).

In the first years of study within the theoretical and pre-clinical disciplines, the student learns the biological laws of living nature in relation to veterinary medicine, learns about living matter in a broader context in relation to the ecosystem and their interaction with each other. The mission of this study is the knowledge of biochemical processes in complex with the physiology of organs and systems of microorganisms and macro-organisms with the differences of different species of animals.

The basic knowledge is applied in the study of subjects that focus on health and hygiene issues in animal husbandry. For medical practice, he draws knowledge mainly from the fields of anatomy, histology, nutrition and dietetics, physiology and pathological physiology, but also pharmacology, toxicology, laboratory and clinical diagnostics. For its application in practice, theoretical and practical training in professional subjects in the direction of veterinary - therapeutic, but mainly preventive with a focus on environmental protection, ecology and production of health-safe food and raw materials of animal origin. He is ready to deal with waste-free technologies, possibilities of harmless waste disposal or their further use. He/she will use his/her knowledge of residual substances and their impact on the quality of raw materials and food of animal origin in the food chain to protect animal health and the environment with direct impact on human health.

The priority of the study is theoretical and practical training in specialized clinical subjects according to animal species in the aspect of internal, infectious, invasive and toxic diseases, metabolic disorders and damage to the organism by radiation and other adverse environmental influences.

During the course of study, the student acquires knowledge and understanding of diseases common to humans
and animals, thereby contributing to the protection of human health and reduced incidence of zoonotic diseases in the human population.

Part of the study includes the teaching of subjects in the field of food hygiene, which allows the graduate to perform state supervision of food production hygiene and supervision in the protection of state borders from the veterinary and hygienic aspect.

The curriculum is designed to enable the graduate to practically apply himself
in the agrocomplex and to continue to acquire further professional knowledge in postgraduate studies.



Prospects of graduates

The preparation of graduates of the above study programme is aimed at enabling the graduate to fully fulfil the following professional focus and application of the graduate in practice:- in the field of state veterinary administration to perform veterinary supervision, to address and guide the elimination of identified deficiencies,

  • within the meaning of the legislation in force, to carry out supervision of the import, export and transport of animals, animal products and animal feed,
  • establish the conditions for the use of feed and monitor compliance with them,
  • supervise the import and export of foodstuffs and biological products,
  • execute slaughter inspections of animals and meat and other animal products
    and decide on their movement and usability,
  • develop contingency plans, preventive and control measures in the event of the occurrence of diseases classified in the international classification of O.I.E. and other diseases,
  • develop preventive and coping measures, including comprehensive sanitation, for infectious and invasive diseases in animal husbandry,
  • monitor diseases characterised by natural outbreaks and implement measures to protect human health and the environment,
  • carry out a complete laboratory diagnosis of infectious, invasive and production diseases, applying the principles of laboratory practice,
  • plan, organise, control and carry out professional activities in the protection and production of the environment,
  • operate in the field of livestock primary production and in food and feed industry undertakings,
  • perform tasks in the management functions of livestock production and in undertakings processing raw materials of animal origin,
  • perform various functions in hygiene and epidemiological, inspection, control
    and laboratory activities, develop scientific, advisory and expert activities,
  • act as a private veterinarian providing diagnostic, therapeutic, consultative and preventive services in the field of diseases of farm, domestic and exotic animals (district veterinarian, in veterinary clinics, clinics, etc.) in the sense of the graduation promise of the graduate of the UVLF,
  • to work as a veterinary specialist in the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of the Interior,
  • to work in research, development, production and distribution of biopreparations, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, veterinary devices and instruments,
  • to work as researchers in scientific and development institutions of the medical field, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Slovak Academy of Sciences,
  • work in teaching positions in secondary, vocational and higher education institutions,
  • operate in the European Union and other countries of the world.

Conditions of admission

Admission to study at UVLF in Košice is conditional on obtaining a complete secondary education or a complete secondary vocational education and successfully passing the entrance examinations. The order of applicants will be determined on the basis of the number of points achieved in written tests in biology and chemistry and the evaluation of active participation in high school Olympiads and SOČ in profile subjects (biology, chemistry) and for other activities, which the student must provide in writing with the application form.



Conditions for international students

Admission conditions are the same as for Slovak applicants.
Another condition for foreign applicants to study in Slovak language is knowledge of Slovak language at least at B1 level. Candidates must prove their knowledge of the language by a certificate confirming their proficiency at the above level, or complete a Slovak language course organised by a third party for the needs of the UVLF in Košice before starting their studies.

The Slovak language level is not required for applicants with a prior knowledge of the language.
