The profile of the graduate of the study programme Pharmacy is formed as a medical discipline, scientifically and practically focused on the education and teaching of professionals for the field of pharmacy, consisting in the research and control of drugs and medicines. It is primarily focused on their production, quality control, distribution, acquisition, storage and use of documents in this industry in the past and present. The aim is to obtain drugs, transform them into medicines and dispense them at the time of need in the necessary quantity and of the prescribed quality so that they can fulfil their preventive, diagnostic or therapeutic role.
Graduate pharmacists are part of the human and animal health care team who actively contribute by identifying or recommending drugs needed for therapy to the individual patient health care system. They demonstrate a high degree of knowledge, understanding and practical skills in chemical, biological, medical and especially pharmaceutical disciplines. By completing their studies, they will gain knowledge of the effects of drugs in living organisms, their metabolism, biodegradation and excretion, their adverse effects on the body and the environment, their residues and impact on food quality, resistance and addiction to the drugs or excipients used.
They will also learn about the effects of drugs on the body and the environment.
They are experts in pharmaceutical technology of drug and biologics production, they know the principles of good laboratory practice (GLP), good manufacturing practice (GMP) and good pharmaceutical practice (GPhP). They are specialists in the evaluation of pharmaceuticals, their clinical or biological testing, their analysis, physical and chemical properties, and they are familiar with the methods of the system of registration or marketing of pharmaceuticals.
Graduates of the pharmacy study programme have adequate knowledge of the pharmacological effect of individual groups of drugs, their pharmacokinetics, possible toxicological effect on living organisms or the environment. They are able to effectively evaluate scientific data on drugs and medicines and, on the basis of the knowledge acquired in the study of pharmacy, they are able to accurately provide information on the effects of drugs to the general public.
The graduates of the pharmacy study programme are proficient in the basic legal, ethical, economic norms and habits of functioning of pharmacy practice with regard to the use of current information technologies (storage, distribution of medicines and responsibility for their quality).
Prospects of graduates
Pharmacy - dispensing, distribution of medicines, magistraliter - preparation of medicines, communication with patients about medicines - i.e., performing pharmaceutical care for patients in the health care system.
Hospital and Medical Centres - graduates can carry out pharmaceutical care of patients as clinical pharmacists for GP and clinical healthcare with possible specialisation, e.g. oncology, infectious diseases, psychiatry, etc.
Pharmaceutical industry - pharmacy graduates will be employed in the development and production of pharmaceuticals, in the research of developed, new, pharmacologically active substances and pharmacological products, they can participate in the biological testing of new drugs or new pharmacological preparations.
Education - pharmacy graduates can be employed in medical secondary and university education as future professional scientists or teachers.
Commercial sphere - pharmacy graduates can find employment in the cosmetics industry, as dealers of large pharmaceutical companies, they are also usable in research institutes and facilities as experts in the field of development, synthesis and biological testing of pharmaceuticals.
Drug Control - they are employed in state drug control systems and as drug experts and in health insurance companies or the insurance system.

Admission to study at UVLF in Košice is conditional on obtaining a complete secondary education or a complete secondary vocational education and successfully passing the entrance examinations. The order of applicants will be determined on the basis of the number of points achieved in written tests in biology and chemistry and the evaluation of active participation in high school Olympiads and SOČ in profile subjects (biology, chemistry) and for other activities, which the student must provide in writing with the application form.
Conditions for international students
Admission conditions are the same as for Slovak applicants.
Another condition for foreign applicants to study in Slovak language is knowledge of Slovak language at least at B1 level. Candidates must prove their knowledge of the language by a certificate confirming their proficiency at the above level, or complete a Slovak language course organised by a third party for the needs of the UVLF in Košice before starting their studies.
The Slovak language level is not required for applicants with a prior knowledge of the language.
