Characteristics of the study programme
Theoretical knowledge of the graduate of the doctoral degree in psychology: the main topics of the study field are related to psychology as a science in general, especially to educational, counseling and school psychology as separate disciplines. Study topics represent current trends in psychology, with emphasis on counseling, school, and educational psychology (current issues in educational, counseling, and school psychology, identification of risk factors for health disorders and salutogenic factors promoting health across developmental periods, current prevention and intervention programs across the lifespan and with respect to evaluating their effectiveness, knowledge of current counseling and psychotherapeutic models, psychological orientations, psychological methodology, and statistics).
Practical Skills of the Graduate Doctoral Degree in Psychology:
The creative activity in the field of science is focused on the preparation and implementation of a more complex research project, adequate selection of research methods and research population and research design, collection and processing of data of quantitative and qualitative nature. The creative activity also includes the deepening of knowledge for psychological analysis, synthesis, interpretation, generalization, on the basis of which conclusions and suggestions for recommendations for specific areas of life are formulated, with an emphasis on the personality development of the individual in school, family, partnership, marriage and professional environments. The graduate will acquire the ability to analyze and synthesize scientific research data obtained through quantitative and qualitative procedures, oriented in innovative methods of student-centered learning with an emphasis on developing autonomy and fostering critical thinking.
Additional knowledge and skills of the graduate of the doctoral degree in psychology include, in addition to deepening knowledge of the history and trends of the current development of the field of psychology with emphasis on the field of educational, counseling, and school psychology, linking research to the applicability of results in practice, and the ethical and social aspects of scholarly work, the preparation of scientific and professional publications bringing new professional-scientific psychological knowledge with recommendations for social practice, the development of competence in educating future psychologists, the implementation of information and communication technologies in the teaching process, the didactic and psychological aspects of e-learning.
Prospects of graduates
The graduate of the doctoral study programme is oriented in the latest knowledge and development trends brought by scientific research and practice in the field. He/she is able to critically assess this knowledge with knowledge of relevant theory and is able to independently design and implement his/her own research activities, both independently and in a team. Is proficient in the methodology of psychological research and the use of modern statistical data analysis techniques. Is able to apply the results of research in the relevant field to psychological practice. The graduate's knowledge and skills in the field represent the European standard for a budding researcher. It is applicable not only in scientific research, but also in pedagogical work, in national and supranational institutions.
They can find their application in jobs with application to various fields, respecting the guidelines and in accordance with Act 199/1994 Coll. Act on Psychological Activity and the Slovak Chamber of Psychologists. Graduates of the doctoral study programme in Psychology work predominantly in the field of higher education, science and research, where they work in positions for which the minimum condition for the performance of professional activity is a third degree in Psychology. They are also potentially working in all positions as graduates of the second cycle of higher education in psychology. They may obtain further employment in accordance with specialisation and attestation education in the position of psychologist or psychotherapist in accordance with the legislation in force.
