Projekt zároveň nadväzuje na aktivity Slovenskej lekárnickej komory v oblasti podpory zdravého starnutia a posilnenia úlohy farmaceuta v preventívnej zdravotnej starostlivosti.

Pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare providers to the general public, representing a key sector of the healthcare system. As part of the study of pharmacy profile subjects, students gain a basic understanding of pharmaceuticals, their fate in the body and their effects on the patient. With the increasing pace of technological advances and the emphasis on personalized care, there is a natural shift in the competencies of pharmacists - from the traditional model of drug distribution to active participation in individual patient-centred healthcare.

The aging population, the increase in polymorbidity and polypharmacy in the geriatric patient group increases the demands on pharmaceutical expertise and clinical decision making. It is in this area that it is crucial for future pharmacists to be able to effectively identify pharmacotherapeutic problems, monitor drug therapy, and provide education with an emphasis on safety and treatment rationalization. The implementation of modern training tools, such as the virtual patient, allows for the effective simulation of complex clinical situations in a safe environment, thereby promoting the development of critical thinking, clinical skills, and teamwork abilities.

For this reason, the project aims to innovate the teaching of pharmacy students' profile courses (pharmacology, clinical pharmacology, clinical pharmacy, pharmacy-social pharmacy) through the integration of interactive software equipment enabling students to practice good decision-making in the field of pharmaceutical patient care. The developed model will allow students to evaluate the responses of a virtual patient to selected interventions, thus learning to respond flexibly to different clinical situations, including high-risk cases in geriatric practice.

The next step of the project is the application of the acquired knowledge in the real conditions of social service facilities, where students will assist in optimizing the pharmacotherapy of the elderly in collaboration with the professional team. The result will be the creation and validation of a standard procedure for pharmaceutical intervention in this specific group of patients. The project is also linked to the activities of the Slovak Chamber of Pharmacy in the field of promoting healthy ageing and strengthening the role of pharmacists in preventive healthcare.

The main idea of the present project is to cultivate and prepare fourth year pharmacy students to work with patients in the sense of individual care by involving an interactive virtual patient aid with the possibility of choosing an intervention and monitoring the response to the chosen procedures in real time.
