Journalism Studies

The graduate is able to master the theoretical foundations of journalistic activities in the press, radio, press and marketing agencies, has knowledge of the development of world and domestic journalistic activities, has practical knowledge, practical experience and technical skills in the areas of authoring activities and editorial work in the periodical press, radio, press and marketing agencies, as well as work in new media and the Internet, They are able to express themselves in their mother tongue in a cultured manner thanks to the acquisition of the contemporary Slovak written language and the basics of public relations styles, they have knowledge of the essence and roles of news and journalism, the ways of rendering text, image, sound and audiovisual communications, the theory and practice of editing in the individual media. The graduate will acquire the skills to be a strong, natural personality, capable of dialogue on any topic. He or she will gain the experience of correctly asserting his or her point of view, as well as accepting criticism and counter-arguments. Professionalism will be demonstrated not only in the form of the processing of materials but also in their content (ethical treatment of any topic). His basic motivation will be to report objectively and truthfully on what is happening in society. In addition: he will work without emotions and mainly with arguments, he will gain a sufficient overview of the social sciences, a society-wide overview of events in Slovakia and abroad, he will learn the principles of ethical work as a journalist and, upon graduation, he will pledge to abide by them, he will learn about and respect the Constitution and institutions of the Slovak Republic, and he will work in the name of humanistic ideals and respect for the democratic system of society. The content of the study programme fully coincides with the field of study 3.2.1 Journalism. In the course of his/her studies he/she has acquired the most important knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for teaching academic subjects. He has mastered the professional content of the disciplines as a specific field of human knowledge, and can actively work with and use this knowledge. He/she is capable of lifelong development of knowledge and skills in his/her specialisation. Has adequate knowledge of research and development methods.



Prospects of graduates

Graduates of the Journalism study programme are qualified to exercise the profession of editors (text and image editors in periodical press, radio, in press and marketing agencies, in new media and internet, in publishing houses), moderators, news reporters in periodical press and radio editorial offices -public and private. Editor (text and image), moderator, reporter - they master the basics of journalistic activities in print, electronic, new media, in Internet magazines, in press and marketing agencies and publishing houses, an overview of the history of domestic and world journalism, speaking in front of a microphone, reporting and journalistic techniques, contemporary Slovak written language and the basics of public relations styles, computer processing of journalistic text, psychological and sociological aspects of the profession.

Conditions of admission

Conditions of admission to study for the following study programmes: English AND AMERICAN studies, English LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE IN COMBINATION, Philosophy (philosophy in English),PsYCHOLOGY and JURALISM

  • acquisition of a full secondary education or a full secondary vocational education
  • commitment to respect the Catholic spirit of the university and faculty;
  • successful completion of the entrance examination, which consists of:

completion of a oral interview focusing on the motivation and performance of the adept, which is evaluated with a maximum of 40 points. Applicants to these programmes send two samples of text production (printed or on CD) with their application. These may be: 1. the results of journalistic work (newspaper article, radio or television piece) published in school, local or other media; 2. any texts (e.g. essays) except poetry. A maximum of 10 points will be awarded for submitted samples before the entrance examination. In order to pass the examination, the candidate must obtain a minimum of 60% of the total of 50 points.

The results of the entrance examination will be taken into account in the final ranking of candidates.



Additional information

Health disadvantaged applicants may request that the form and method of the entrance examination be determined taking into account their disadvantage (a written request is sent together with the application form).

General information on the admission exam

The application must be accompanied by:

a) a certified copy of your high school diploma

- applicants who have passed the matriculation examination in the previous period shall submit a certified copy of the matriculation certificate together with the application form,

- applicants who have passed the matriculation examination in the previous period shall submit a certified copy of the matriculation certificate together with the application form,

- applicants who will take the matriculation examination in 2022 shall submit a certified copy of their matriculation certificate after the matriculation examination,

b) fee payment receipt to be pasted on page 3 of the application form (without proof of payment, the application will not be registered),

c) a decision on the recognition of a foreign secondary school diploma for the purpose of continuing studies in the Slovak Republic (valid for applicants who obtained their secondary education abroad),

d) a certificate proving the level of Slovak language proficiency (at least B2) according to the Common European Framework of Reference (valid for applicants for study programmes requiring the submission of the document).

Student applicants can also submit only electronic application form without the need to print it, sign it and send it to the postal address of the faculty.

Acknowledgement of the registration of the application form and information about the further process in the admission procedure will be sent to applicants by electronic or conventional mail.

Deadline for verification of admission requirements: June 30, 2022 at the latest.

A written decision on the result of the admission procedure will be sent to applicants no later than 30 days after the verification of the fulfilment of the admission requirements. The written decision shall be delivered to the applicants by hand.
