Prospects of graduates

Absolvent doktorandského štúdia v študijnom programe Dizajn preukazuje schopnosť a pripravenosť na samostatnú tvorivú a výskumnú činnosť v oblasti dizajnu a príbuzných odborov. Je pripravený formovať a zverejňovať trendy a koncepcie v tejto oblasti. Absolvent ovláda vedecké a umelecké metódy tvorivej práce v dizajne. Je schopný študovať zahraničnú literatúru v origináli, slovom a písmom ovláda aspoň jeden svetový jazyk.
Absolvent sa môže uplatniť ako:
samostatný tvorivý dizajnér, vedúci dizajnérskych tímov, vedecký a výskumný pracovník v oblasti dizajnu, vysokoškolský pedagóg, odborný publicista.

Conditions of admission

Attention, there has been a change! Updated 14. 4. 2020

Applicant to the doctoral level study at AFAD will fill in and send an online application, which will be placed at the school web page from 27. 3. 2020 to 9. 7. 2020. Then they have to send the following electronic attachments to the e-mail adress  in one pdf file, with the maximum size of 8 MB:

  • CV and detailed account of artistic or publishing activity in the form of a portfolio (more information in the downloadable document)
  • Brief proposal of the dissertation project, which has to be in accordance with the topic that the applicant has applied for.
  • a copy of the second level study diploma. In case of international diploma, official translation to Slovak is required
  • international applicants and applicants who studied abroad will, in case of being accepted to AFAD,  submit the official acknowledgment of their education certificates/diplomas issued internationally no later than by the closing date for the enrolment to the studies.
  • a copy of documents accompanying the diploma, or a transcript of completed subjects with weighted GPA (grade point average), certified by the study department of the relevant university (applicants from other universities than AFAD), and in case of an international document, official translation to Slovak language is required.
  • proof of admissions fee payment
  • documents of completed language exams (in case there are any)
  • Applicants for the topic in the Fine Arts study programme are recommended to apply one year after they have completed their master study

Dissertation topic 1: New materials and technologies in woven textile  practice and interdisciplinarity development in textile design

doc. MA Mgr. Mária Fulková

The doctoral  student will focus on the research of  new  materials and technologies implemented in mass production, as well as technologies which are in process of developing. The intelligent textiles, as well as functional and  eco textiles will be the subjects of research. Interdisciplinary cooperation with experts from different fields will play an essential roel in this research. The doctoral student will also study the role of a designer on a multidisciplinary team od professionals. There profesionals are involved in the innovation of materials and technological process as well as connecting innovation with industrial production. The important part  of  the project will be an authentic design collection of  woven textiles .

Dissertation topic 2: Forms of user interfaces and interactivity in the post digital age

doc. Mgr. art. Ján Šicko, ArtD.

Focus of the research is based on the fields of user interfaces and interactions between electronic / computer systems and humans in the post digital era. Research requires particular definitions of its domains and forms of interactions. Subjects of the research are defined as possible situations and scenarios presenting explicit forms of design of user interfaces and strategies of interactions. Experimental approach is expected to accomplish valid forms usable designs. Inceptor is expected to design several functional prototypes of interfaces applied in specific scenarios. Range of the applications varies from everyday usage, game design, to audio-visual or performative forms of the art.

Dissertation topic 3: Visual Communication in a Space

The extend of the topic and doctoral research may be related to the issue of visual communication in a space, Slovak or Central European arthistorical, social and cultural context, investigation of the potential and possibilities, positions and influence of visual communication in architecture, public space and exhibition, but also methods of education in the field.

Dissertation topic 4: Knowledge Bases of Visual Communication

Research and design of the "Knowledge Base" of concrete teaching rocesses of visual communication, which is applicable at different levels of the study. The actual outcome of the theoretical and practical dissertation should be integrated in its compact form (content, form) into the system of education at schools with art program. The content of the theoretical part of the dissertation should be clearly defined by the subject area or the lecture cycle. The form of dissertation practical part output should be easily updated with the latest knowledge in a particular field of visual communication, as well as a practical and complementary aid in the teaching process.

Dissertation topic 5: Design of visual communication applied in educational process

prof. akad. mal. Stanislav Stankoci

Application of design of visual communication into the educational tools and resources in the educational environment, aiming their practical use in the teaching process. The content and visual concept of dissertation thesis should be directed to promote efficiently support method and system for teaching and learning processes in schools of all grades. Within the content of postgradual study is necessary that the applicant notes in his project, in which field of education, respectively in which subject or subjects, may the dissertation thesis find its application in the support of teaching. Media output range is unlimited, but must be appropriate to the nature of teaching and professional profile of the subject.

Všetci zahraniční uchádzači (s výnimkou českých) musia do nástupu na štúdium ovládať slovenský jazyk v úrovni B1.

Zahraniční uchádzači a uchádzači, ktorí študovali v zahraničí, v prípade prijatia na štúdium doložia rozhodnutie o uznaní dokladu o vzdelaní vydaného v zahraničí najneskôr do zápisu na štúdium (september 2021)

General information on the admission exam

Applicant to the doctoral studies at AFAD can become a student of the chosen study programme based on a completed admission procedure. If the student has completed the master study, i.e. the second level study programme, they can apply to admissions to AFAD, which will be conducted on 27.-28. 8. 2020, and become a contender for one of the doctoral study topics. Part of the admissions to the doctoral studies at AFAD is an admission interview, whose purpose is to examine applicant’s skills and abilities to independently and creatively fulfil admission requirements of the doctoral studies at AFAD. 

Form of entrance exam

Admission interview will examine applicant’s level of knowledge, talent, thinking, skills and abilities in the terms of special demands given by the chosen doctoral study programme at AFAD.

Admission interview to the doctoral study is conducted before an admission committee appointed by the rector of AFAD and each study programme has its unique committee.

Committee will take into consideration applicant’s results from the completed master study programme (weighted GPA), but much more important for the committee will be the range, quality, and results of applicant’s artistic or scholarly publishing activity, and the activity in their field of interest (e.g. at student art works’ exhibitions, or results in student scientific and scholarly work, etc.).

Admission interview consist of the following parts:

  • foreign language test
  • presenting the portfolio of artistic or publishing activity by the applicant
  • presentation of the project and the topic of the dissertation
  • discussion between the committee members and the applicant
  • committee assesses and awards points to applicant’s portfolio, artistic, or publishing activity and the presented project of the dissertation
