English and American Studies - Philosophy

The programme provides students with a basic understanding of the English language and the culture and society of English-speaking countries. Courses cover the basic range of linguistic, literary and translation theory disciplines in appropriate depth with the aim of producing graduates who will be permanently familiar with the latest research findings in English linguistics and literary studies. The programme includes a wide range of electives.

The graduate student is able to pursue new developments in the constantly evolving subject of philosophy. In the course of his/her studies, he/she has acquired the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for independent reasoning and evaluation. He/she has mastered the professional content of the subjects of the different parts of philosophy as a specific area of human cognition, and is able to work actively with this knowledge and use it. He/she is able to expand his/her knowledge and skills in his/her specialisation throughout his/her life. He/she has adequate knowledge of the methods of argumentation, as well as of the methods of the most important philosophical schools and trends, such as phenomenology, analytic philosophy, and pragmatism.

Graduates of the Bachelor's degree programme in Philosophy are eligible to perform, according to the degree of profession attained, the corresponding activities of a team or independent creative (conceptual) worker in institutions and establishments, such as governmental and non-governmental humanities-oriented institutions and organisations, third sector organisations and institutions, institutions engaged in empirical identification of the state of society (e.g. Public opinion research), cultural and social institutions, foundations, civic associations, editors of professional and social journals, publishers of professional (social science) literature, political institutions, state and public administration (human resources), mass media, management. Graduates may also continue their studies in a master's degree programme in the given or related study programme.

Conditions of admission

Conditions of admission to study for the following study programmes: English AND AMERICAN LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE IN COMBINATION, PHILOSOPHY (philosophy in English),PsYCHOLOGY and JURALISM

  • acquisition of a full secondary education or a full secondary vocational education
  • commitment to respect the Catholic spirit of the university and faculty;
  • successful completion of the entrance examination, which consists of:

completion of a oral interview (which may be conducted online). The oral interview is conducted in English and tests the candidate's level of knowledge of the cultural and social history of Anglophone countries. The interview also identifies personal and motivational prerequisites for the study. Maximum score 10, minimum score for the oral interview 6.

The results of the entrance examination are taken into account in the final ranking of applicants.



Additional information

Health disadvantaged applicants may request that the form and method of the entrance examination be determined taking into account their disadvantage (a written request is sent together with the application form).

General information on the admission exam

The application must be accompanied by:

a) a certified copy of your high school diploma

- applicants who have passed the matriculation examination in the previous period shall submit a certified copy of the matriculation certificate together with the application form,

- applicants who have passed the matriculation examination in the previous period shall submit a certified copy of the matriculation certificate together with the application form,

- applicants who will take the matriculation examination in 2022 shall submit a certified copy of their matriculation certificate after the matriculation examination,

b) fee payment receipt to be pasted on page 3 of the application form (without proof of payment, the application will not be registered),

c) a decision on the recognition of a foreign secondary school diploma for the purpose of continuing studies in the Slovak Republic (valid for applicants who obtained their secondary education abroad),

d) a certificate proving the level of Slovak language proficiency (at least B2) according to the Common European Framework of Reference (valid for applicants for study programmes requiring the submission of the document).

Student applicants can also submit only electronic application form without the need to print it, sign it and send it to the postal address of the faculty.

Acknowledgement of the registration of the application form and information about the further process in the admission procedure will be sent to applicants by electronic or conventional mail.

Deadline for verification of admission requirements: June 30, 2022 at the latest.

A written decision on the result of the admission procedure will be sent to applicants no later than 30 days after the verification of the fulfilment of the admission requirements. The written decision shall be delivered to the applicants by hand.
