The Faculty of Humanities of the University of Žilina was established on 20.12.2010 from the Faculty of Natural Sciences on the basis of the Decision of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Slovak Republic No. 2010-15787/46239:4-071 delivered on 20.12.2010 on the registration of the amendment No. 8 to the Statute of the University of Žilina, which was approved by the Academic Senate of the University of Žilina at its meeting on 20 September 2010, entered into force on the date of registration and became effective on the date of delivery of the decision on registration to the Ministry of Education, Science and Higher Education of the Slovak Republic.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Žilina was established in 1998 as a workplace integrating the staff of natural sciences. After the separation of the Faculty of Pedagogy and Catechetics in Ružomberok from the University of Žilina, the Faculty of Natural Sciences was given the task of developing studies in disciplines that were absent in the region (mathematics, English language, music education and religious education).

The profile of the faculty was thus gradually transformed, departments of humanities and social sciences were built, and the spectrum of study programmes offered was expanded, enabling graduates to find employment in the European labour market.

The Faculty of Humanities of Žilina University of Žilina currently has four departments whose scientific, research and pedagogical focus corresponds to the principles of education in the 21st century towards a learning society:

  • Department of Media and Cultural Heritage
  • Department of Educational Studies
  • Department of English Language and Literature
  • Department of Philosophy

The mission of the Faculty of Humanities of UNIZA is to develop education, science and research in the spirit of universal humanities traditions and to contribute to the credit of the University of Žilina as a quality research university with its broad humanities profile.
